The Headies Awards Head North: Toronto Set to Host Prestigious Afrobeats Ceremony in 2026
In a strategic move to amplify the global footprint of African music, the Headies Awards announced this week that its 18th edition will take place in Toronto, Canada. The decision, revealed Monday at a special event held at Lagos’s Eko Hotels and Suites, marks another international chapter for one of the continent’s most prestigious music honors—but organizers are making it clear that Nigeria isn’t being left behind in the celebration.
Headies founder Ayo Animashaun addressed the crowd of entertainment stakeholders, government officials, and industry leaders, explaining the vision behind the cross-continental ceremony. Rather than simply relocating the awards, the 2026 edition will feature a unique dual-city experience, connecting Lagos and Toronto through a simultaneous watch party and live show format. “We’re not just going to Toronto; we’re not leaving Nigeria behind,” Animashaun emphasized during his address. This innovative approach aims to keep Nigerian audiences fully engaged while expanding the platform’s international reach.
The decision hasn’t come without questions from the industry. When challenged about staging the awards outside Nigeria again, Animashaun was direct about the financial realities of sustaining a world-class awards show. “Someone said, ‘Ayo, you are taking the Headies out of the country again.’ He said it doesn’t make sense. Tell me what makes sense. Does it make sense for us not to do it anymore? So how do we fund it? I said, sponsors,” he explained. The Toronto move represents a calculated effort to secure the funding and sponsorship necessary to continue elevating Nigerian music on the global stage. While a specific date for the 18th Headies hasn’t been announced, the international expansion signals the continuing evolution of Afrobeats as a truly worldwide phenomenon.
