Why Canada will host the 2026 Headies Awards

The Headies Awards is crossing borders once again, with organizers confirming that the prestigious ceremony’s 18th edition will land in Toronto, Canada in 2026. The announcement marks a strategic pivot for Africa’s premier music awards, as it seeks to balance global expansion with its Nigerian roots.

Founder Ayo Animashaun unveiled the plans Monday at a packed event at Lagos’ Eko Hotels and Suites, surrounded by industry heavyweights, government representatives, and entertainment stakeholders. But here’s the twist: Nigeria won’t be left out of the celebration. Animashaun revealed that Lagos will host a simultaneous watch party, creating a live connection between both cities during the main ceremony. “We’re going to Toronto for the 18th Headies,” Animashaun explained. “The second thing is that we’re not just going to Toronto; we’re not leaving Nigeria behind. We’re going to have a watch party between Toronto and Lagos.”

The decision to stage the awards internationally hasn’t come without pushback. Animashaun addressed critics head-on, pointing to the financial realities of producing a world-class awards show. “Someone said, ‘Ayo, you are taking the Headies out of the country again.’ He said it doesn’t make sense. Tell me what makes sense. Does it make sense for us not to do it anymore? So how do we fund it? I said, sponsors,” he stated candidly. The Canada move is part of a broader vision to amplify Nigerian music’s global footprint while securing the sponsorship deals necessary to keep the platform thriving. The exact date for the 2026 ceremony remains under wraps.

As the Headies continues evolving into a truly international platform, this Toronto edition represents both an opportunity and a statement: African music is a global force that demands stages beyond the continent.
