In a groundbreaking moment for Nigerian cultural representation on the global stage, culinary anthropologist and food writer Ozoz Sokoh—better known to her devoted following as Kitchen Butterfly—has claimed the 2026 James Beard Foundation Award for Emerging Voice in Books. Her debut cookbook, Chop Chop: Cooking the Food of Nigeria, isn’t just collecting accolades; it’s rewriting the narrative about African cuisine in mainstream American food culture. Sokoh made the journey to Chicago’s Art Institute to accept the honor in person, becoming the first Nigerian cookbook author to ever win the prestigious award often dubbed the “Oscars of the food world.”
The James Beard Foundation designed the Emerging Voice category to spotlight first-time authors whose fresh perspectives push boundaries and expand understanding of their subject matter. Sokoh’s work does exactly that. Published by Artisan Books, Chop Chop delivers 100 authentic Nigerian recipes spanning all six geopolitical regions of the country—from egusi soup and pepper soup to jollof rice, suya, and puff puff. But this isn’t just a recipe collection. Sokoh weaves deep cultural and historical context throughout, tracing the intricate ways Nigerian cuisine has both influenced and been shaped by global food traditions. The book had already earned serious recognition before the James Beard win, landing on the New York Times Best Cookbook of 2025 list and securing the gold Nautilus Book Award in the Food, Cooking, and Healthy Eating category.
Sokoh’s journey to this historic moment started in 2009 when she launched her blog, Kitchen Butterfly, documenting her culinary research and passion for Nigerian and West African food culture. Over nearly two decades, she’s built her reputation as one of the most authoritative voices on African food history, with her work featured on major platforms including Smithsonian Magazine, CNN African Voices, and the late Anthony Bourdain’s Parts Unknown. Celebrating her win, Sokoh shared her excitement about receiving the award in Chicago, marking a triumphant milestone in her mission to bring Nigerian food stories to the world stage.
