2026 Afro Nation: Top performances to look out for on day 1 in Portugal

Afro Nation Portugal 2026 Day One: Burna Boy, Tyla, and Amapiano Stars Set to Ignite Praia da Rocha

The beaches of Praia da Rocha are about to pulse with the sounds of contemporary African music as Afro Nation Portugal launches its 2026 edition today, Friday, July 3. The festival’s opening day features a powerhouse lineup that captures the continent’s musical diversity—from Afrobeats royalty to the rising tide of Amapiano taking over global dancefloors.

Nigerian superstar Burna Boy anchors Day One with what promises to be an electrifying headline performance. The Grammy-winning artist has become synonymous with Afro Nation over the years, consistently delivering some of the festival’s most memorable moments. Joining him at the top of the bill is South African sensation Tyla, whose meteoric rise through a fusion of Amapiano, Afropop, and R&B has made her one of Africa’s most buzzed-about international exports. Kenyan vocalist Bien—carving out an impressive solo path after his Sauti Sol days—brings East African flavor to a traditionally West African-dominated festival circuit, while British-Nigerian artist Darkoo represents the diaspora’s creative force.

The festival’s two-stage setup highlights African music’s current landscape. The LIT Stage will serve up contemporary Afrobeats and pan-African pop, while the Piano People Stage is essentially a masterclass in South Africa’s Amapiano movement. Leading that charge is Uncle Waffles, the DJ whose global ascent mirrors the genre’s explosive international growth. She’s backed by a deep roster of SA talent including Zee Nxumalo, Felo Le Tee, Nkosazana Daughter, Royal Musiq, Success SA, JazzWorld, Thukuthela, and GL_Ceejay—ensuring non-stop Amapiano grooves throughout the day. Also performing is Denden, rounding out a lineup that spans from Lagos to Johannesburg to Nairobi.

With this cross-continental roster, Afro Nation Portugal’s opening day sets an ambitious tone for a weekend celebrating African music’s ever-expanding global footprint.
