Ayra Starr’s ‘Heaven Baby’ is a global hit begging for a real label push

Ayra Starr’s “Heaven Baby” Is Doing Numbers—So Where’s the Label Support?

Just ten days into its release, Ayra Starr’s “Heaven Baby” featuring ZAYN is already proving it has what it takes to be a global crossover smash. The real question? Whether Mavin Records and Republic Records will give it the promotional firepower it deserves.

Since dropping as part of Ayra’s third studio album Starrgirl on August 14, the ballad has been climbing charts with impressive velocity. It’s sitting at No. 2 on Apple Music Nigeria and peaked at No. 3 on Spotify Nigeria. Internationally, the track debuted at No. 1 on the UK Official British Asian Music Chart and made early entries on both the UK Afrobeats Songs Chart and the German Spotify Chart at No. 158. The numbers tell a compelling story: 100,000+ TikTok uses in the first two days, 790,000 Spotify streams on day one, and a peak daily stream count of 937,721. For context, pairing with ZAYN—one of the most recognizable voices in pop music over the past decade—is Ayra’s highest-profile international collaboration to date.

Yet despite this organic momentum, there’s a glaring absence of the coordinated marketing push that typically accompanies such promising metrics. Ten days in, fans are still waiting for an official music video—only a lyric video exists on YouTube. There’s been no visible major radio campaign in the US or UK, no high-profile TV performance announcements, and nothing approaching the coordinated global playlist strategy that propelled her 2022 hit “Rush” to international success. The piano-led duet, co-produced by Stefan Johnson, Jordan K, and Fermin Suero Jr., showcases the perfect contrast between Ayra’s conversational Afropop delivery and ZAYN’s signature falsetto. This isn’t filler material—Ayra has shared in interviews that the finished track moved her to tears. But right now, it’s being treated like an album cut when it has all the markers of a legitimate crossover single.

The comparison to “Rush” is instructive. That track didn’t become a top 10 hit in France and South Africa, crack the UK Singles Chart at No. 24, or earn Ayra her first Grammy nomination by accident. It happened because the labels recognized the metrics and mobilized resources accordingly. “Heaven Baby” is already outperforming “Rush” in several key areas during the same launch window, and it arrives with built-in international appeal through ZAYN’s involvement. The window for capitalizing on this momentum is narrow, especially with Tems, Tyla, and Rema all actively working their own international releases. Every week without a proper push is a week where another artist can claim the lane that “Heaven Baby” has already earned on pure numbers. Ayra Starr stands at a critical juncture in her career—armed with a Grammy nomination, a Billboard 200 album, and now a feature that opens doors her name alone might still struggle to access. The song isn’t asking for a miracle; it’s asking for the standard treatment any track with these metrics would ordinarily receive. Whether Mavin and Republic deliver remains the pressing question.
