Nigeria’s global music powerhouses are once again making their mark on one of music’s biggest stages. The 2026 MTV Video Music Awards have recognized both Burna Boy and Tems with a combined three nominations, ensuring African excellence remains front and center at the September 27 ceremony in Los Angeles. The African Giant secured two nods for his sizzling collaboration with Shakira on “Dai Dai,” landing spots in both the Best Collaboration and Best Latin categories. Meanwhile, Tems continues her unstoppable ascent with a Best R&B nomination alongside British-Nigerian rapper Dave for their atmospheric track “Raindance.”
The recognition comes with a bittersweet twist, however. For the first time since its introduction in 2023, the Best Afrobeats category has been completely removed from the VMAs lineup. The category had become a symbolic moment of global validation for the genre, with Rema and Selena Gomez claiming the inaugural award for “Calm Down,” followed by South African sensation Tyla who dominated the next two years with wins for “Water” and “Push 2 Start.” The category’s absence means Afrobeats artists must now compete within broader genre classifications—a move that has sparked conversation about whether this represents progress toward full integration or a step backward in specific recognition.
Despite the category shake-up, the African and diaspora presence across the 2026 nominations remains robust. PinkPantheress leads the charge with five nominations for “Stateside + Zara Larsson,” while RAYE picked up two nods, and artists like Shaboozey, Tyler the Creator, and French Montana round out the representation. Madonna dominates the overall nominations with 11, followed by Taylor Swift’s nine, but the consistent African influence across multiple categories proves that the continent’s musical impact transcends any single award designation. For Burna Boy and Tems, these nominations represent another opportunity to showcase Nigerian artistry on a global platform where they’ve already proven they belong.
