Gaise Baba Challenges The Headies to Rethink Gospel Music’s Place in Mainstream Categories

Nigerian Afrogospel artist Gaise Baba is demanding change from The Headies Awards. The singer behind the hit track “No Turning Back” has publicly questioned why faith-based music gets siloed into inspirational categories while being shut out from competing in mainstream genre classifications—even when the artistry meets the mark.

In an open letter posted to X on August 28, 2026, Gaise Baba laid out his case ahead of The Headies’ 18th edition, scheduled for October 25 in Toronto, Canada. Drawing on his 15-year career in Nigerian music, the artist argued that a song’s subject matter shouldn’t dictate which category it competes in. His point? A rap song is still rap whether it talks about money, love, or faith—and it should be judged on flow, delivery, production, and craftsmanship, not just its message. By forcing gospel rap into an “inspirational” box, The Headies effectively blocks it from recognition in the broader rap field. The same logic, Gaise insists, should apply across songwriting, production, and performance categories for all gospel-themed music that meets artistic standards.

The singer also called out his experience at the previous Headies, where his song “Particularly” featuring Tope Alabi earned a nomination in the Inspirational Music category. Despite his team participating fully—media rounds, pre-award reception, the works—that category never got called during the actual ceremony. For an event stretching over five hours with 35 categories, Gaise questioned why some awards simply disappeared from the stage. He’s pushing back against what he sees as an unfair system: music exploring controversial themes gets judged on artistry, while faith-centered songs get cordoned off. Pointing to tracks like “Favour” and his own “No Turning Back II,” he asked whether these records have had less cultural impact than other nominees this cycle. Commercial success and artistic merit, he argues, shouldn’t hinge solely on subject matter.

Despite his critique, Gaise Baba is back in the 2026 Headies race—”No Turning Back II” with Lawrence Oyor is nominated for Best Inspirational Single alongside Sunmisola Agbebi, Sinach, EmmaOMG, and Mercy Chinwo. His intervention has sparked a necessary conversation about whether Nigerian gospel artists deserve a seat at the mainstream table, judged by the same standards as everyone else.
