The Best Tiny Desk Performances from Nigeria’s Afrobeats Elite

NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert series has become the ultimate litmus test for musical authenticity. Stripped of pyrotechnics, elaborate choreography, and studio polish, it’s just raw talent, live instruments, and a cramped office space that’s hosted some of the most memorable performances in modern music. For Nigerian Afrobeats artists, the Tiny Desk has served as a powerful platform to showcase the genre’s depth and versatility to a global audience. From Burna Boy’s commanding presence to Tems’ ethereal vocals, these intimate sessions have captured lightning in a bottle time and time again.

The African Giant himself, Burna Boy, set the tone back in 2019 with a powerhouse set featuring “Gbona,” “Wetin Man Go Do,” “Dangote,” and “Ye.” His performance became an early blueprint for how Afrobeats could translate in the stripped-down format.
