The moment Afro-fantasy fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. Paramount Pictures just unleashed the official trailer for Children of Blood and Bone, and it’s a visual feast that positions African mythology at the center of a Hollywood blockbuster—complete with Afrobeats royalty Ayra Starr making her major film debut.
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (the visionary behind The Woman King), this epic adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel is set to hit theaters and IMAX screens on January 15, 2027. The trailer wastes no time establishing the mythical kingdom of Orïsha in all its glory: desert plains, floating water villages, lush rainforests, and magic-infused battle sequences that Hollywood has rarely granted Black fantasy stories. The narrative centers on Zélie Adebola, played by Thuso Mbedu, a young warrior determined to restore magic to her people after a brutal monarchy violently stripped it away. The footage showcases Mbedu channeling glowing purple and blue magic, wielding staffs in combat, and commanding earth and spirit powers in breathtaking forest battles. Oscar winner Viola Davis appears as Mama Agba, delivering ancestral wisdom in the trailer’s opening moments, while the ensemble cast reads like a who’s who of Black excellence: Damson Idris, Amandla Stenberg, Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, and Idris Elba all bring gravity to this world.
But for Afrobeats heads, the real excitement lies in seeing Nigerian superstars Richard Mofe-Damijo, Ayra Starr, Shamz Garuba, Bukky Bakray, and Temi Fagbenle share the screen with Hollywood heavyweights. Ayra Starr’s inclusion marks another milestone in the global rise of Afrobeats artists crossing into mainstream film, proving that the genre’s influence extends far beyond music charts. Based on Adeyemi’s 2018 debut novel, the film follows Zélie’s dangerous quest alongside her brother Tzain and rogue royals Amari and Inan to bring magic back to the maji people. With Prince-Bythewood’s proven track record of crafting powerful African narratives and a cast this stacked, Children of Blood and Bone is shaping up to be a landmark moment for Black fantasy cinema.
