Paramount Pictures just dropped a stunning behind-the-scenes look at Children of Blood and Bone, and the hype is reaching fever pitch ahead of tomorrow’s official trailer release. Director Gina Prince-Bythewood is bringing Tomi Adeyemi’s beloved fantasy novel to life with a vision that celebrates African culture, diaspora talent, and authentic storytelling on an epic scale.
The film transports viewers to Orïsha, a mythical West African kingdom where magic has been stripped from the people. Thuso Mbedu stars as Zélie Adebola, leading a dangerous mission to restore power to her community alongside her brother Tzain (Tosin Cole), Princess Amari (Amandla Stenberg), and Prince Inan (Damson Idris). But what makes this production truly special is the powerhouse ensemble that reads like a who’s who of Black excellence: Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Cynthia Erivo, and Lashana Lynch all bring their talents to the screen. Nollywood legend Richard Mofe-Damijo represents the continent’s film royalty, while Afro-pop sensation Ayra Starr makes her big-screen debut, adding another dimension to this cultural moment.
Shot across South Africa’s breathtaking natural landscapes—from dense forests to a mesmerizing pink lake—the production team went all-in on authenticity. Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler constructed massive multi-tiered thatch villages from the ground up, while costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones hand-stitched intricate garments and armor that honor African craftsmanship. Hair department head Andrea Mona Bowman created distinct looks for each clan using the diverse textures of the African diaspora, and makeup lead Matiki Anoff drew inspiration directly from traditional Yoruba body painting techniques. The action sequences, choreographed by Fatima Robinson and Daniel Hernandez, showcase intense stick fighting, martial arts, and sword combat that Mbedu herself performed with wirework and stunts.
With a global theatrical release set for January 15, 2027, Children of Blood and Bone represents a major moment for African storytelling on the world stage. The full trailer drops tomorrow, but this featurette has already proven one thing: Orïsha is ready to captivate audiences everywhere.
