CKay Channels Playful Confidence in “BADMINTON”

Nigerian singer-songwriter CKay is back with “BADMINTON,” a playful and confident track that sees the “Love Nwantiti” hitmaker exploring themes of romantic pursuit with his signature smooth delivery. The mid-tempo Afrobeats record showcases CKay’s evolution as an artist unafraid to experiment with metaphors and wordplay.

Released alongside a vibrant music video shot in Lagos, “BADMINTON” uses the sport as a creative metaphor for the back-and-forth dynamics of modern dating and attraction. Over production by Yo X and Auxxk, CKay delivers verses that balance swagger with vulnerability, a combination that has become his trademark sound.

“The concept came from watching people play badminton at a resort,” CKay revealed during an Instagram Live session. “I loved the energy, the movement, the strategy. It reminded me of how we navigate relationships—sometimes you’re in control, sometimes you’re on defense.”

The music video, directed by TG Omori, features colorful visuals, playful choreography, and cameo appearances from several Nigerian entertainers. The aesthetic leans into retro vibes with vintage cars, period costumes, and film grain effects that give the video a timeless quality.

Since breaking through internationally with “Love Nwantiti” in 2021, CKay has been strategic about his releases, focusing on quality over quantity. “BADMINTON” marks his third single of the year and continues building anticipation for his debut album “Sad Romance,” which has been teased for months.

The track has already been added to major Afrobeats playlists across streaming platforms and is receiving early radio support in Nigeria, Ghana, Kenya, and South Africa. CKay’s global fanbase, which he affectionately calls the “CKay Lovers,” has embraced the song enthusiastically, with the hashtag #BADMINTONchallenge gaining traction across social media.

Industry analysts predict “BADMINTON” could replicate the slow-burn success of “Love Nwantiti,” which took months to become a viral sensation but eventually became one of the most-streamed Afrobeats songs of all time.

CKay is currently preparing for a European tour scheduled to begin in May, with “BADMINTON” expected to become a staple in his live performances.
