Paramount Unveils First Look at “Children of Blood and Bone” Film Bringing West African Fantasy to Life

The anticipation is building. Paramount Pictures just dropped an exclusive behind-the-scenes featurette for the highly anticipated film adaptation of Children of Blood and Bone, and it’s giving fans everything they’ve been waiting for. With the official trailer set to premiere tomorrow, this sneak peek reveals how director Gina Prince-Bythewood is transforming Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel into a cinematic celebration of West African culture and mythology. The fantasy epic, centered on Zélie Adebola’s quest to restore magic to her people in the kingdom of Orïsha, is slated for a global theatrical release on January 15, 2027.

The casting alone is enough to make headlines. South African actress Thuso Mbedu takes on the demanding lead role of Zélie, tackling intense stunt work and wirework to bring the character’s magical journey to life. She’s joined by Damson Idris as Prince Inan, Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari, and Tosin Cole as Tzain. But the star power doesn’t stop there—Viola Davis, Idris Elba, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, Cynthia Erivo, and Lashana Lynch round out a powerhouse ensemble. The production also brings in Nollywood legend Richard Mofe-Damijo and Nigerian Afrobeats sensation Ayra Starr, making this a true celebration of the African diaspora.

Filming across South Africa’s natural landscapes—from lush forests to a stunning pink lake—the production team went all in on creating a tactile, lived-in world. Oscar-winner Hannah Beachler designed multi-tiered thatch villages from scratch, while costume designer Charlese Antoinette Jones hand-crafted garments and ornate armor. Hair department head Andrea Mona Bowman used diverse diaspora hair textures to distinguish the film’s different clans, and makeup lead Matiki Anoff drew directly from traditional Yoruba body paint techniques. Action choreographers Fatima Robinson and Daniel Hernandez brought the fight sequences to life with stick fighting, martial arts, and sword combat that honor African traditions. Prince-Bythewood’s vision is clear: build a world rooted in love, respect, and passion that uplifts the source material and the culture it represents.

With the full trailer dropping tomorrow and the film hitting IMAX theaters worldwide early next year, Children of Blood and Bone is positioning itself as a landmark moment for African storytelling on the global stage.
