Watch the Official Children of Blood and Bone Trailer Starring Thuso Mbedu, Viola Davis & Ayra Starr

Ayra Starr Joins Star-Studded Cast in Epic “Children of Blood and Bone” Film Adaptation

The moment African fantasy fans have been waiting for has finally arrived. Paramount Pictures just unleashed the official trailer for Children of Blood and Bone, and it’s a stunning celebration of Black storytelling on the biggest stage possible. Dropping ahead of its January 15, 2027 theatrical release, this adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s bestselling novel brings the mythical world of Orïsha to life with a cast that reads like a who’s who of African and diaspora talent—including Nigerian superstar Ayra Starr making her major film debut.

Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood (The Woman King), the trailer opens with a powerful scene between young Zélie and her mother, portrayed by Oscar winner Viola Davis, before diving deep into Orïsha’s tragic history. The visuals are breathtaking: floating water villages, ancient rainforests, and sacred ancestral grounds serve as the backdrop for a story about magic stolen from the maji people by a brutal monarchy. At the center of it all is Thuso Mbedu as Zélie Adebola, wielding her staff with fierce precision, channeling purple and blue magic, and commanding earth and spirit powers in battle sequences that promise to redefine what Afro-fantasy looks like on screen.

The ensemble cast is absolutely stacked. Alongside Mbedu are Damson Idris as Prince Inan, Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari, and Tosin Cole as Tzain. Hollywood heavyweights Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, and Idris Elba round out the roster. But what’s particularly exciting for African audiences is the Nigerian powerhouse representation: legendary actor Richard Mofe-Damijo, chart-topping singer Ayra Starr, plus Shamz Garuba, Bukky Bakray, and Temi Fagbenle all bring their talent to this epic fantasy. The film follows Zélie’s dangerous mission to restore magic to her people, joined by her brother Tzain and rebellious royals who must choose between family loyalty and justice.

With an IMAX release planned and a scope that Hollywood rarely grants to African-centered fantasy, Children of Blood and Bone is shaping up to be a landmark cultural moment. Seeing Ayra Starr transition from dominating Afrobeats charts to the big screen? That’s the kind of crossover magic we love to witness.
