The mythical world of Orïsha is about to take over the big screen, and Nigerian superstar Ayra Starr is part of the magic. Paramount Pictures just unleashed the official trailer for Children of Blood and Bone, the blockbuster adaptation of Tomi Adeyemi’s beloved fantasy novel—and it’s already breaking the internet. Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, the visionary behind The Woman King, this film is set to redefine how Hollywood approaches Afro-fantasy storytelling when it lands in theaters and IMAX on January 15, 2027.
The newly released teaser wastes no time establishing the grandeur of this project. Opening with a powerful scene between young Zélie and her mother—portrayed by Oscar-winning legend Viola Davis—the footage plunges viewers into a visually stunning realm of floating water villages, lush rainforests, and sacred ancestral lands. At the center of it all is South African actress Thuso Mbedu as Zélie Adebola, a warrior on a mission to restore magic to her oppressed people. The action sequences are breathtaking: glowing purple and blue magic, ancient sigils burning into skin, staff-wielding combat, and epic battles against snow leoponaires. This is the kind of scale that African fantasy has been waiting for.
The ensemble cast reads like a dream team of Black excellence. Alongside Mbedu, the film stars Damson Idris as Prince Inan, Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari, and Tosin Cole as Tzain. Heavy hitters Cynthia Erivo, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Regina King, and Idris Elba round out the powerhouse lineup. But what’s particularly exciting for the culture is the Nigerian representation: Ayra Starr, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shamz Garuba, Bukky Bakray, and Temi Fagbenle all bring authentic African talent to this groundbreaking production. Based on Adeyemi’s 2018 bestseller, Children of Blood and Bone follows Zélie’s dangerous quest to bring magic back to the maji people, who had it violently stripped away by a ruthless monarchy. With Hollywood finally investing in African narratives at this scale, this film could be a watershed moment for Black fantasy cinema—and having Afrobeats royalty like Ayra Starr in the mix makes it even more monumental.
